Assessments for Dyslexia

A full diagnostic assessment by an appropriately qualified specialist is the only way to confirm dyslexia. This assessment investigates the child or young person’s literacy skills in detail using a range of standardised assessments that explores underlying ability, language and vocabulary, reasoning, memory, phonological skills, verbal processing and reading, writing and spelling skills. The assessment takes around 2-3 hours including rest breaks. An analysis of the assessment data, background information provided and observations during the assessment is completed so that a detailed profile of strengths and weaknesses is created. A diagnostic outcome is confirmed, or not, in a thorough written report to SASC (The SpLD Assessment Standards Committee) guidelines including a plan of tailored recommendations for support in the school, college or university setting.

Assessments for reading spelling and writing difficulties

Learning Difficulties Assessment for reading, spelling and writing explores the child or young person’s literacy skills using standardised assessments and observation. It is not as extensive as a diagnostic assessment for dyslexia because it is aimed at providing practical support in the classroom to help develop the child or young person’s literacy skills. A profile of strengths and vulnerabilities is created and next steps in learning identified in a plan for school settings that builds on strengths and preferred learning styles. Additional recommendations for classroom practice are provided as well as tips for helping at home. A review of the child or young person’s progress can be arranged if required.
