Frequently asked questions.
What ages do you work with? We work with children and young people from the age of 6 to 25, depending on the type of work we do.
Where do you conduct the assessments? Ideally assessments are conducted in the child or young person’s school or college. This is so that there is an opportunity to discuss findings and to plan support with school staff as well as parent carers. Assessments can also be conducted in other locations if appropriate, and should be agreed when the assessment is being arranged.
Do I have to tell my child’s school about the assessment? Ideally, yes, your child or young person’s school or college should be informed and included in the assessment process, whether the assessment is a literacy difficulties or full dyslexia assessment. This is so that there is an opportunity to discuss findings and to plan support with school staff as well as parent carers. However, we know that sometimes involving the school may not be appropriate so this would be discussed when the assessment is arranged.
Do I have to tell school that you have given me advice on SEND? It is generally better to for your child’s school or college to know that you have concerns about your child or young person. However you do not need to tell the school or college that you have sought advice on SEND from an Education Consultant. The advice you are provided with is for you to use in the way that is most useful to you.
Which areas do you cover? We work with schools, colleges and parent carers predominantly in Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, but also have connections in London, Berkshire and Hampshire.
What if I’m not sure what I need - an assessment or something else? We understand that sometimes it can be difficult to work out exactly what is needed to change something that isn’t working. Please use the contact form and if needed, a free initial phone call may be offered to agree next steps.
